Meet Nathaniel
Nathaniel enjoys the opportunity tutoring provides to slow down and help students understand concepts they may have missed in the classroom. He believes one-on-one support allows material to be broken into manageable pieces and taught at a pace that reflects the individual student’s needs.
As both an education student and current classroom teacher, Nathaniel understands how quickly frustration can affect a student’s confidence. He creates space for students to talk through their thinking, ask questions and experience success as they work toward more challenging material.
What Sessions with Nathaniel Are Like
Nathaniel begins by reviewing what the student is learning in class and asking which concepts feel confusing. He may also have the student work through a question aloud so he can identify exactly where their understanding begins to break down.
From there, Nathaniel separates the process into individual steps and works through it several times, gradually providing less assistance as the student becomes more confident. He uses prompting questions, guided practice, diagrams and whiteboards to help students think through problems without simply being given the answer.
If a student feels overwhelmed, Nathaniel adjusts the question, offers a short break or begins with a step the student can complete successfully before building toward more difficult test-style questions.
Education & Experience
Nathaniel is completing a combined Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education at the University of Lethbridge and is currently in his final teaching practicum.
He teaches Math 9 and Math 20-2 and coaches football at Highwood High School. His classroom experience has helped him learn how to recognize when a student is shutting down, adjust his approach and rebuild engagement through manageable questions and achievable steps.
Beyond Tutoring
Outside of teaching and tutoring, Nathaniel enjoys hiking, camping, fishing, working on classic cars and trucks, and watching hockey and football. He also plays guitar and enjoys music, mathematics and science.
A fun fact about Nathaniel is that he now teaches at the same school he once attended as a student.
