Meet Katrina

Katrina enjoys helping students work through difficult concepts until they begin to make sense. She especially loves seeing students become more confident in themselves after struggling with a subject.

Katrina wants students to feel comfortable asking as many questions as they need. She uses plenty of examples and is happy to explain an idea in different ways until the student develops a strong understanding.

What Sessions with Katrina Are Like

Katrina begins by asking which areas feel difficult and working through related material with the student. She asks questions throughout the process and has the student attempt examples independently so she can identify what they understand and where they need additional support.

From there, Katrina slows the process down, offers a different explanation and works through gradually more challenging problems. She adapts sessions as she becomes familiar with the student’s learning style, interests and academic goals.

Katrina also enjoys using games, memorable sayings and creative connections to make challenging material more approachable. While helping a student with Chemistry 30, she connected concepts to stories and memory aids that matched how the student learned best. The student became more confident and began seeing improvement in their test results.

Education & Experience

Katrina is completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia Okanagan and hopes to pursue a career in aerospace engineering.

She has been teaching piano since she was 15 and has worked with students of various ages. This experience has taught her how to adjust her instruction, recognize when a student needs a different approach and create a comfortable learning environment. Katrina also received an honourable mention in calculus when she graduated from high school.

Beyond Tutoring

Outside of university and tutoring, Katrina enjoys playing piano, painting, drawing, bouldering and spending time with friends. During high school, she participated in band, musical theatre and vocal ensemble.

A fun fact about Katrina is that her family has six cats!
