Meet Sydney D.
Sydney loves helping students discover greater confidence in reading and writing. She believes students learn best when instruction reflects their individual needs and focuses on skills they can continue using throughout school and beyond.
She is particularly passionate about English and Social Studies and enjoys helping students organize their ideas, understand complex texts and communicate more clearly.
What Sessions with Sydney Are Like
Sydney begins by asking questions and having the student demonstrate what they currently understand. From there, she identifies a manageable starting point and adapts the session to the student’s goals and preferred way of learning.
Sessions may include written examples, real-world connections, colour coding, guided questions, practice quizzes and summary notes. Sydney also uses student teach-back to confirm understanding and may pause, change topics or model an example when a student needs time to regroup.
Education & Experience
Sydney graduated from Spurgeon College with an Associate of Divinity and is completing a Bachelor of English at the University of Calgary. She graduated with honours in both high school and college and hopes to pursue a career in publishing, editing or archival administration.
She also brings a year and a half of experience as a grading assistant. In this role, Sydney provided personalized written feedback and learned to quickly identify opportunities for improvement. She has helped students make meaningful progress with sentence structure, paragraph organization and overall writing clarity.
Beyond Tutoring
Sydney enjoys reading, writing, travelling and visiting museums. She lived in Kansas City, Missouri, for two years while attending college and has a particular love for classic literature, especially the works of Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters.
